For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God's gift. Ephesians 2:8
Twenty-four years ago, the St. Matthew Lutheran School staff of 1993 were collaboratively working on a school family fellowship event when the first "Progressive Dinner" concept evolved. It was during this brain-storming session that the design of each classroom making a portion of a meal and parents purchasing tickets to "progress from room to room" to sample the meal was conceived. As the part-time 6 - 8 Language Arts teacher at that time, my assignment was to work in the kitchen with a few 8th grade moms to make spaghetti for approximately 75 people, and it was a wonderful night!
Since then, the Progressive Dinner has become an annual event, and over the years, it has grown and taken on various forms and themes. What is even more exciting is that is became a powerful outreach tool that has given us an avenue to help many people or organizations. During the past three years, we have even brought in outside organizations, like "Kids Against Hunger" and used this venue to assemble food packages to give to needy people.
In honor of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, we felt that it was time to go back to the original design of the Progressive Dinner and create a German themed "Oktoberfest" where students will help with the preparation of this celebratory meal. Join us on Friday, October 13th! The menu is as follows:
- 7th/8th Grade - German Potato Salad & Spätzle
- 5th/6th Grade - Root Beer Tent & Pretzels
- 3rd/4th Grade - Brats & Frankfurters
- 1st/2nd Grade - Black Forest & Diet of
- Diet of Worms Delight
- Preschool/Kindergarten - Apple Strudel
In addition, there will be games, activities, and fun facts to learn about the Reformation. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. and food service will end at 6:30 p.m. The evening will conclude with a family square dance in the gym that will take place from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., so please join us in the gym when you are done eating and socializing.
Tickets are $3.00 per person or $15.00 per family. All proceeds from the ticket sales of this event will be sent to Lutheran World Relief, to assist with all the recent disaster efforts.
Traditionally, we serve between 300 - 400 people at this dinner. In order for us to adequately prepare, we ask that you please purchase your tickets by Friday, October 6th. Please click here to register online.
We are looking forward to an evening of great fun, and we hope to see you there! As Martin Luther would say, "This is most certainly true!"
In Jesus' love,
Mrs. Palka
