Welcome Back, Mrs. Brown!

What an exciting year for our second graders as they have been blessed with TWO amazing teachers!  During the first quarter, they were able to learn and grow from Mrs. Lenghart, who so graciously filled in during Mrs. Brown's maternity leave.  Now, they are blessed to have Mrs. Brown for the rest of the school year!  Mrs. Brown is excited to be back and is enjoying getting to know her second graders!

Quick...what is the capital of Maine?  If you need a little help, feel free to ask any of our fourth graders as they have begun the exciting quest of journeying across the United States and learning all of the state capitals.

The seventh grade is currently learning about Greek mythology during their literature classes and expanding their writing experiences by creating some of their own unique myths.  Functioning as a Google classroom, our seventh grade has become almost paperless as most assignments are done online, including correspondence from Mrs. Weston with her feedback and suggestions.

The Classroom Corner: Academic Highlights of How God is at Work in Our School, This Week Featuring Preschool

As stated in the book, "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" by Dr. Seuss, our Preschool is literally experiencing the opening text of "Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!" as their formal educational journey has officially begun!
When you walk into our Preschool room, you are immediately greeted by bright and vibrant colors that invite our youngest students into an exciting world of learning.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to chat with a group of 8th graders and talk about how their final year at St. Matthew is going.  Immediately, I received the response, "It's going by way too fast!" Another jumped into the conversation by saying, "This year has been so much fun."  A new student added, "I really like how nice everyone is to each other."

Academic Highlights of How God is at Work in Our School

As you walk into the third grade classroom, you are greeted with a sign that states,  "It's A Great Day To Learn Something New".  This is a very appropriate sign because there are so many new and essential concepts being taught in third grade!
One exciting enhancement that Mrs. Topel is utilizing this year is a program known as "Seesaw", a 21st century form of parent communication.  Seesaw is a student driven digital portfolio that empowers students to document their learning.  Parents have access to their child's account and can view the digital assignments created throughout the school day.  Parents also have the ability to communicate words of encouragement to their child, as well as communicate with Mrs. Topel.  Third grade is really enjoying the process of integrating this new educational tool into their classroom learning.

A famous quote by Robert Fulghum states, "All I really need to know I learned in Kindergarten."  When you spend a little time in our Kindergarten classroom, you  quickly realize that there is a lot of wisdom in this quote because there are so many valuable lessons that are occurring at this age!

Each week, we will highlight one particular grade level, just to share the awesome things that God is doing in our classrooms.
Two weeks ago, it was a very exciting in sixth grade as each student received his/her own individual Chromebook.  For the past two years, St. Matthew has implemented a "One to One" device program starting in the sixth grade.  St. Matthew shares the cost with parents for a Chromebook, and at the end of 8th grade, each student will get to keep his/her device. Students are responsible for bringing their individual Chromebooks to school every day fully charged and ready for classroom instruction.

Our middle school language arts program is designed as a Google classroom where their Chromebooks will allow them to learn how to effectively utilize and incorporate technology to be innovative 21st century learners.  Eventually, a Google classroom becomes paperless as students learn to manage their assignments utilizing the Cloud and working collaboratively with each other and their teacher.
