Lunch Bags of Love - "Do Something" Significant for Homeless Victims in Detroit

"Whatever you do for the least of these, you do unto me."  Matthew 25:40

Supervising the lunchroom for many years, I have learned a lot. I have been extremely impressed with how willing children are to eat the healthy foods packed in their lunches. I have learned about family favorite meals such as "pizza casserole", "taco pie", and "slimy chicken". This year, I have also watched our Kindergarteners demonstrate their promising culinary skills by making daily food "creations", such as pickles and cheese on top of applesauce or potato salad smeared on pizza. However, there is nothing as exciting as a loving note found in a lunchbox. Often, I am greeted by an excited child waving a piece of paper and proclaiming, "look what I got!"

One of my favorite memories of a lunchbox note occurred many years ago, when one of our fifth grade girls was given the responsibility to make her own lunch. As I walked by her lunch table, I could hear her reading her note to her friends: "Dear Leah, I think that you are amazing. Have a great day! Love, Leah."

Everyone appreciates a little encouragement!

This Sunday, during our 18th Annual Progressive Dinner, the families of St. Matthew will have the opportunity to give a little lunch bag encouragement as we construct 400 lunches for homeless victims who seek refuge at the Noah Project Warming Center.

From 5:00-7:00 p.m., families will have the opportunity to eat pizza together, while making lunches that will consist of a sandwich, a soft fruit, chips, a cookie, juice box, and a note of Christian encouragement.

The Noah Project is based inside Central Methodist Church, which is located next to Comerica Park in downtown Detroit. On Monday, January 23rd, our 8th graders will have the opportunity to travel to Central Methodist Church to help distribute the lunches with Mr. Topel, Mr. Welte, and myself. During this time, we will also transport all of the hats and gloves that the 8th grade DI team collected during their Talent Show.

To help with the organization of the Progressive Dinner, we are hosting two sign up times. Group One will make lunches from 5:00 - 5:45 and then eat pizza. Group Two will eat pizza from 5:15 - 5:45 and make lunches from 6:00 - 6:45 p.m. To sign up for this event, please click HERE, or use the form that will be sent home. The cost for this event is only $3 per person, and we are asking that all families please sign up by Friday, January 20, 2017. All ticket proceeds will be used for purchasing lunch bag items.

It is our hope that you will be able to join us and help us do something significant for Jesus by helping and encouraging those who are in need.

In Jesus' love, Mrs. Palka
